Reticular Activating System Explained

I have been using the Law Of Attraction to manifest the life of my dreams for nearly a decade now. I have gone from flat broke to being a millionaire, from a broken marriage to being married to the woman of my dreams, from living in the gloom and cold of the United Kingdom to a villa by the sea on a sun-drenched Mediterranean island.

However, up until a few weeks ago, I had no way to prove it to you other than hoping you find my own story inspiring enough.

The reason I believe there is now zero doubt over whether the Law of Attraction works or not is down to something in our brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Reticular Activating System Location

We are sensory animals, and at any one time we are being bombarded with over 14,000,000 bits of information. Even sitting in an empty room would overload our brain with data if we didn’t have some way to filter out the important from the irrelevant. For example, does it matter what color the walls of the room are if the temperature has suddenly dropped below freezing?

Yes, our minds are incredibly sophisticated. We can sort through billions of bits of data at any given time. And for some reason, so we don’t short circuit, we have to organize that data. The Reticular Activating System assists with that.

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a collection of nerves in your brainstem that filters out unnecessary information so the essential stuff makes it through.

You get what you focus on!

The RAS is the explanation you learn a new word and then start hearing it everywhere. It’s the reason that you can disregard a crowd full of talking people, however immediately snap to attention when somebody mentions your name or something that at least resembles it.

Your RAS takes what you concentrate on and develops a filter for it. It then sorts through the data and delivers only the parts that are essential to you. All of this happens without you noticing, naturally. The RAS programs itself to work in your favor without you actively doing anything. Pretty awesome, right?

Similarly, the RAS seeks data that validates your beliefs. It screens the world through the parameters you give it, and your beliefs form those parameters. If you think you are weak at giving speeches and presentations, you probably will be. If you feel you work efficiently, you probably do.

Everything in your life is a reflection of your inner state

The Reticular Activating System helps you see what you would like to see and in doing this, influences your actions.

Many people suggest that you can train your RAS by taking your subconscious thoughts and marrying them to your conscious thoughts. They call it “establishing your intent.” This essentially means that if you concentrate hard on your objectives, your RAS will uncover the individuals, data and opportunities that help you achieve them.

If you love positivity, for instance, you will become more aware of and look for positivity. Have you noticed that when you make a carefully thought out decision to buy a specific brand and type of car you start seeing those automobiles everywhere you go?

When you examine it like this, The Law of Attraction does not seem so mysterious. Focus on the negative things, and you will invite pessimism and problems into your life.

You are in control of your destiny

Concentrate on the great, and they will come to you because your brain is seeking them out. It’s not magic; it’s your Reticular Activating System affecting the world you observe around you.

Articles and scrappy YouTube videos suggest many ways to teach your RAS to get what you want, but I find this method to be the most practical:

First, think about the objective or circumstance you wish to influence.

Now think about the experience or result you want to reach in regards to that goal/situation.

Mental blockbuster

Create a mental motion picture of how you envision that goal/situation preferably turning out in the future. Notice the noises, dialogues, aesthetic and particulars of that psychological movie. Replay it frequently in your head.

Of course, in reality, these things aren’t as easy as they sound, but I do think that our Reticular Activating System (RAS) can be instructed. It’s about visualizing what we want, and after that allowing our unconscious and conscious collaborate to make it happen.

Law of attraction made simple

The idea is: If I can hear my own name in a crowd of thousands, can I also tune my brain to focus and attract the essential things that matter to me? I’m reasonably sure I can. This is why I keep my 421 Journal with me anywhere I go, and reread it frequently. I have to continually refocus and remind my mind what matters and what does not.

My mission in life is to understand it, to take it apart, catalogue the components and put it back together again. Then to take what I have learned to help other people understand.

I have always had this fascination with how stuff works. I used to horrify my family when I was a child, they would buy me an expensive toy as a gift and the first thing I would do is take it apart until it was a thousand pieces on the living room carpet. I would even do this when my parents were not around and with their stuff, like my Dad’s record player or my mum’s hairdryer.

Curiosity killed the cat

You have heard the expression that curiosity killed the cat, right? In my case that is very nearly true, I can remember getting several serious electric shocks as a result of disassembling high voltage equipment to understand how it worked.

So it doesn’t surprise me that today I take human beings apart (not literally) and try to understand what makes them tick. I notice from examining myself that there are some areas of my life where I am supremely confident and as a result success just seems to flow unrestricted. Yet, the same cannot be said for all areas of my life and in some things, I am paralyzed by fear and self-doubt and I see very poor performance in these areas.

What fascinates me about this is the person we are talking about is the same person. What I wanted to know is why I can be unstoppable at one thing and ineffective and lame at another. The conclusion I came down to is all about belief.

You are what you believe yourself to be.

This is very exciting because it means if you get your thinking correctly aligned you are practically limitless. Of course, because everything life is balanced and you can’t have good without bad or sweet without sour. If your inner perception is wrong then you can easily end up living a life somewhere between mediocre and miserable.

I have always been very stubborn and resistant to rules. Pretty much everything I have achieved in my life has been against a very vocal chorus telling me that what I want is impossible and I am silly for even trying.
