Easy Enneagram: The Secrets Behind Your Personality Type
Easy Enneagram: The Secrets Behind Your Personality Type
By Craig Beck
The enneagram has proven to be extremely accurate. It reveals your strengths, weaknesses, core motivations, moods, mannerisms and basically a complete picture of your internal self.
The Enneagram system of categorizing personality types has been around since ancient times. Although it has only relatively recently entered popular culture
In the last few decades, this system has gained increasing prominence in the arena of personal developmental and success research.
The term ‘Enneagram’ comes from the Greek word for the number nine. The reason being that there are nine unique character types. Each of the points in the enneagram represents a distinctive and diverse personality type.
A person who has the traits of a type one (typically known as the reformer or perfectionist) may differ significantly from a man or woman who is a type 4 personality (classically recognized as the artist or the individualist).
The Enneagram Personality system is a powerful tool.
It can help you understand the motivations of others but perhaps most importantly it can help you understand your own self!
When you attempt to find your Enneagram type you need to concentrate on your general personality. Namely what you have resembled over an extended period of time or most of your life to date.
The greatest mistake one can make while doing this evaluation is to do it for the sake of doing it without examining yourself properly. This frequently results in marred results and unreliable findings. You have to be prepared to take the good with the bad.
If you are doing this as an exercise to find out how wonderful you are then you may be in for a depressing wake up call.
In order for this test to work properly, you have to ensure you answer everything truthfully, without filtering the answers or by lying to yourself.
For example, you could be faced with a choice between assertiveness and shyness.
Though one wishes to be more assertive, you have to be really truthful with yourself about where you are the majority of your life and not claim to be self-assured or desire to be more – it doesn’t work if you think into the future to establish who you wish to be. You must be where you are right now – this is your true nature.
Once you figure out who you are, there are numerous online Enneagram tests that will reveal to you 3 things:
– Your dominant type
– The primary wing
– Your instinctual sub-type
Record these down in addition to the 2nd and 3rd results of the test. Often times, the script will generate a set of results that is most likely your personality. Make sure to examine the results of the 2nd and 3rd probability, as it is important for you to consider all the possibilities particularly when all the results are really close to each other.
If you are a type 5 (investigator/observer) like me, it means that you are born into that type.
You may argue that a person experiences growth throughout their lives. You may object to being labeled by pointing out your considerable development over the years. While it is true you have matured and grown into a more rounded human being.
This doesn’t mean that your type shifts
It means that you have developed from an unhealthy type into a more healthy character type. Remember that no one Enneagram type is better or worse when compared to the others. Growth and development just mean that you are growing from one health level to another.
Each type has its onsets of strength and weaknesses that follows that individual throughout his/her life.
For every single type, there is a set of primary motivations that associate itself with that type. This can be encapsulated into the following:
- – Ego Fixation
- – Holy Idea
- – Basic Fear
- – Core Desire
- – Biggest Temptation
- – Greatest Vice
- – Virtue
Keep in mind that every individual is totally different.
Two individuals of the same dominant Enneagram type may appear and function different outwardly, but their basic core preferences in life is exactly the same.
One of the most important reasons to learn about the Enneagram of personality is to better understand yourself. Some people get a little depressed when they first get into this fascinating subject. They look at the negative tendencies of their type and assume that they are stuck with these problems and there is nothing they can do to change the reality.
I have not found this to be true.
For example I am a type 5 and as such I have all the introverted, deep thinking tendencies that go with this particular Enneagram type. I have always declared quite openly that I have no rhythm and I can’t dance to save my life.
When I learned about this system I realized that this belief is just a lie I have been telling myself to avoid going near an extroverted area of life that I don’t find comfortable.
What has changed in my mindset around this specific issue is I now understand why I don’t like to dance. It is not that I am incapable of doing it; it’s not that I couldn’t learn to be a very good dancer if I put the time and effort in.
The truth is I have avoided this aspect of life and given myself permission to fail because my type finds it uncomfortable.
We all have blind spots in our personalities that we avoid because we have told ourselves that we are not very good at a particular thing. Perhaps yours is that you believe you are not a good public speaker or you could never learn to swim. It doesn’t matter what area of life is specific for you.
I know for certain that there are things that you have pre-decided that you are no good at.
The Great News
The great news is, with a little study of the Enneagram and some investment in yourself. You can quickly identify the areas of your life where you are not giving enough focus. Then you can make an informed decision as to whether your life would be better if you were stronger in this area or not.
Perhaps me becoming a better dancer won’t enhance my life massively. However, I am sure you can see how maybe someone becoming a better public speaker could make a dramatic difference and improvement to his or her career.
If you have studied the law of attraction you will already know that your thoughts become things. Because I believe that I am a terrible dancer I create a self-fulfilling prophecy. However, it is a little more complicated than that.
The law of attraction will also give you more of what you don’t want.
The more you think about what you don’t want or the more you feel afraid of something the more you will get of that situation and the corresponding emotions that go with it.
Someone at some point has probably challenged you to try and not think about a pink elephant or to not be aware of your right foot. It’s impossible to do because of the way our brain works. In order to not think of something you have to think of it first – it’s a paradox.
What we can correlate from this action of our mind is that you can’t push away the things about yourself you do not like.
Any action much have a corresponding reaction. Life is like being inside a giant revolving door, the harder you push the door in front of you away the harder you are going to get hit in the back of the head.
Ergo, the harder you try to avoid or push away the weak areas of your personality type, the more fuel and energy you feed into them.
